The Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts (BAVPA) won the 2019 Kenny Outstanding Musical Production Award for Les Misérables that is sponsored by Shea’s Buffalo Performing Arts Center. The competition included suburban and private schools. BAVAP receives a $10,000 grant from the Lipke Foundation to support its theater department.
The play was directed by Andrew Kottler; music direction by Karen Saxon and Linda Appleby; orchestra conduction by Linda Appleby, and choreography by Rebecca Bateson-Brown.
In addition to the award for the overall award for Les Misérables, Senior Matthew Wilson won Outstanding Male Lead as Jean Valjean, and senior Tallulah Gordon won Outstanding Supporting Female as Madame Thénardier. Further, 7th grader Samuel Parker received the Rising Star: Special Recognition acknowledgement for his role as Gavroche.
